Jane Elizabeth Carlson was a distinguished professor of piano at The Juilliard School for more than fifty years beginning her teaching career in 1947. At Juilliard she also taught piano ensemble, beginning in 1960, and piano pedagogy beginning in 1965. In addition, she was a sought after master class teacher as well as adjudicator for piano competitions.
She received her Bachelor of Music degree from the Shenandoah Conservatory of Music in 1940 and a professional diploma from Juilliard in 1946 where she studied with Carl Friedberg. He studies also included with Myra Hess in London. The Shenandoah Conservatory of Music awarded her an Honorary Doctor Music degree in 1982.
